The Rules is looking for amazing campaigners who want to change the rules that keep people in poverty. We are currently hiring for the following positions:
DIRECTOR OF DIGITAL ORGANIZING
Background
/The Rules is a new citizen-powered, global movement that unites the voices and collective power of the world’s majority to change rules that perpetuate poverty and inequality. Our objective is to build the first truly ‘post-aid’ advocacy organization – a social justice organization that merges the power of digital technology with the solidarity of the global public.
We are evolving the traditional organizing model by marrying the best of online organizing (e.g. the rapid response capability of groups like Avaaz,) with the decentralized network model (e.g. with principles from movements like Occupy and Indignados) and synchronized campaigning (e.g. the concentrated impact of campaigns like Make Poverty History).
Position
The Director of Digital Organizing will be responsible for the overall digital, rapid response and membership growth strategy. You should be a confident project manager, as you’ll be managing campaign portfolios across a diverse range of issues, from land rights to the rights of women and girls, often with multiple actions on them each week. The candidate must have significant online organizing experience with a commitment to building an informed, powerful base of members and allies to change politics and culture at the global level.
The Direcotr of Digital Organizing will lead the design of campaign strategy and tactics, broker partnerships with allies, and implement all aspects of campaigns while working collaboratively with a top-notch team. A critical part of this role is liaising with our Campaigns Working Group, a global network of activists, technologists, policy wonks and issue specialists.
You'll have the opportunity to campaign for lasting reform on critical global issues like tax havens that extract wealth from poor countries, land grabs that steal citizens’ properties from underneath their feet and trade rules that block the majority of the world from accessing the global market. These reforms will be partly achieved by harnessing the power of new technologies to advance social justice organizing and advocacy.
The location of this position is negotiable, but will require an extended on-boarding period at our headquarters in New York.
Qualifications:
Start Date: April 2013
To Apply: Please submit C.V. and two writing samples to jobs@therules.org

- 6+ years of digital organizing experience at a leading, fast-growing organization and cultivating a committed community of members; although you probably come from an online organizing group, you must have a strong critique of the current industry practices and be thinking about ‘what’s next’
- Intimately familiar with the MoveOn/Avaaz/GetUp/38Degrees model of campaigning and can design and implement campaigns in this genre.
- Global development and fighting injustice must be your passion: these issues get you out of bed in the morning

- Intimate understanding of traditional and social media, especially in emerging economies such as India, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, etc.
- Working remotely in an international environment comes naturally to you, as you have the professional drive to work independently and the desire to remain connected to a virtual team.
